North Park Hill neighborhood was one of the first “suburbs” of Denver, developed in the 1880s, but the area didn’t see most homes built until 40 years later. It is located within the confines of Martin Luther King, Colorado, 23rd and Quebec Streets, and is home to 9,700 residents.
History and Background on the North Park Hill Neighborhood of Denver
As one of the most racially diverse areas of Denver, the North Park Hill neighborhood prides itself as a forerunner on neighborhood integration which began in the 1960s. The roots of North Park Hill neighborhood, as well as its counterparts — South Park Hill and Park Hill — go back to 1887 when Baron Allois Gillaume Eugene A. von Winckler originally plotted Park Hill as a development to escape the “hubbub” of the city. This “suburb” was designed to promote a lifestyle of relaxation and tranquility, much like his fellow countryman Baron Walter von Richthofen was advocating in the Montclair neighborhood of Denver. However, home building did not begin in earnest until the 1920s and continued into the 1950s. As a result, there is a collection of architectural styles in the North Park Hill neighborhood.
The North Park Hill community is proud of its history of promoting tolerance and diversity. In the 1960s, it was at the forefront of integrating African-Americans into its all-White neighborhood. This was accomplished with the help of the Park Hill Action Committee, later called the Greater Park Hill Community. This civic and neighborhood association continues to promote the “character and vibrancy” of the Park Hill communities and keeps its residents informed of news and developments with an online monthly newsletter.
