History and Location of Jefferson Park

Jefferson Park neighborhood, like many inner-city neighborhoods, experienced a mass exodus of people to the suburbs in the 1960s. The departure led to urban decay and increased crime for decades. It wasn’t until the mid-1990s when people, seeking affordable housing and reasonable commutes, began returning to the area. The Jefferson Park United Neighborhood Association was formed in 2000 when a development was proposed that would have eliminated a number of 19th-century homes and turned the historic park into an amphitheater. The group ended up having a profound impact and the plans were eventually scrapped.

The neighborhood is now in the midst of a profound transition as are many of the Denver neighborhoods close to downtown.
