The Lowry neighborhood in Denver stands out as one of the relatively newer residential areas in the city. Originally, this vibrant community emerged from the transformation of the former Lowry Air Force Base into a thriving neighborhood. Its boundaries are defined by 11th Ave., Alameda, Yosemite, and Monaco Parkway, encapsulating a diverse mix of residential and commercial spaces. The neighborhood’s rich history is reflected in its name, honoring the memory of Lieutenant Francis Lowry, who made the ultimate sacrifice during World War II.

History of the Lowry Neighborhood

From its humble beginnings following the closure of Lowry Air Force Base in 1995, the Lowry neighborhood is now a well-established community with its own lively town center, 800 acres of open space, historic buildings and delicious restaurants. It is conveniently nestled southwest of Denver’s airport and east of downtown, making it a breeze for its residents to access Denver’s finest attractions and amenities. Since the Lowry neighborhood used to be a military base, there are many open areas that make cycling, running, walking and pursuing other outdoor pursuits a snap. It is also home to many parks including Crescent, Great Lawn, Lowry Dog Park and Ulaanbaatar Park, which in 2001 was named after Denver’s 10th sister city located in Mongolia.

Architecture and Homes in Lowry Neighborhood

The master plan for Lowry neighborhood mapped out a plan providing a variety of housing options. You’ll find a plethora of modern single family homes, townhouses, apartments and condominiums. These beautiful homes are all relatively new and extremely desirable as they feature updated floor plans and fresh interior design motifs. In addition to Denver Public Schools, there are a number of alternative and charter schools in Lowry that appeal to families with young children.

Restaurants and Culture of Lowry

The Lowry Beer Garden is a favorite spot in the Lowry neighborhood where you can taste many of Colorado fine microbrews. Along Quebec Street, there are multiple chain and independent eateries from which to choose, and a variety of retail shops.

Denver’s venerable Colorado Free University/John Hand Theater is located in Lowry as is the Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum, a must stop for any aviation aficionado.
