Elyria-Swansea is a metro Denver mixed-use neighborhood established in the mid-1900s with a historically industrial and commerce presence. It is located east of I-25 and bisected by I-70, making interstate access a breeze for the locals. Today, Elyria-Swansea has been adopted by the Denver City Council to champion neighborhood revitalization, historical preservation, and establish efficient public transportation. According to Etymology Nerd, “Elyria is named after a town in Ohio and Swansea is after a town in Wales.”

Architecture and Homes

Many Elyria-Swansea residents live in 20th century, European inspired Victorian houses, classic cottages, or homes with terraced inspired architecture. This neighborhood’s ambiance is steadily increasing as more plans arise to preserve and expose the greatness of this community.

Residents and businesses gravitate to this community for its strong sense of community, diverse culture, affordable real estate, close proximity to downtown Denver, and the opportunity to join the neighborhood’s development efforts. Many long-time residents want to remain in this area and avoid the “gentrification” that has occured in other inner city neighborhoods. The area is expected to grow over the next 10 years with better transportation options in and out of the neighborhood and the expansion of the National Western Complex.

Restaurants and Culture

The Elyria-Swansea neighborhood has large projects on the horizon such as new commuter rail stations and I-70 updates. Additionally, the National Western Complex remains a strong hub for rich western and agricultural history, education and special events. The National Western is currently working with Colorado State University and four other partners to renovate and enlarge the current site to 250 acres and provide a more influential center for education, research, entertainment and agri-business innovation.

The National Western Stock Show makes it’s home at the National Western Complex and Denver Coliseum ever January. Locals and out of town guests flock to the grounds for their annual fix of western culture, rodeos, livestock exhibitions and shows, and family fun. Throughout the year, the Denver Coliseum also hosts a variety of expositions, theatrical events, trade shows, concerts, and sporting events.

When you find yourself in the Elyria-Swansea area, be sure to check out the historic Denver Stockyard Saloon. This Denver landmark serves up great conversation and burgers inside walls full of history and memorabilia. It’s a must stop in northeast Denver.
