History of Belcaro Neighborhood

The neighborhood gets its name from the mansion of Lawrence C. Phipps, who made his fortune with the Carnegie Steel Company in the late 1800s. He moved to Colorado in 1901 and became a United States Senator who represented Colorado from 1919-1931. Located in the southeast section of the neighborhood, Phipps chose “Belcaro” (“beautiful, dear one”) as the name of the mansion; yet today it is more commonly known as the Phipps Mansion. This Georgian style structure is enormous, boasting 33,000 square feet and is situated on 5 1/2 acres. It features historic gardens and grounds, and a tennis pavilion. In 1964, it was bequeathed to the University of Denver and was used as a conference center and venue for many events including weddings, corporate and philanthropic events, and celebrations. The mansion was purchased in 2010 by Quark founder and philanthropist Tim Gill, who graduated from Wheat Ridge High School and the University of Colorado-Boulder. Proceeds of the sale were added to the Phipps endowment at the University of Denver. The mansion and grounds currently are valued at over $16 million.
