History of Capitol Hill Neighborhood
It goes without saying that Colorado’s state capitol is located in Capitol Hill. Opened in 1894, this stunning building features neo-classical architecture and was constructed from Colorado white granite. The centerpiece of the capitol is its genuine gold dome, commemorating the Colorado Gold Rush. On the steps to the entrance is a plaque identifying the city’s elevation of 5,280 feet, a nod to Denver’s mile-high status above sea level. Inside the capitol, you’ll find an enormous amount of Colorado Rose Onyx (rose marble) as well as beautifully etched stained glass windows. This marvelous building is included in the National Register of Historic Places for good reason.
