The Sloan’s Lake neighborhood is positioned around it’s signature lake and the park surrounding it. The lake is man made, and the anecdotal story claims that a man named Thomas F. Sloan dug into the wrong aquifer and flooded his farm. Located northwest of Denver, Sloan’s Lake is experiencing a tremendous boom in popularity and population. Renovations on old bungalows, and newly built townhomes and condos provide a mix of old and new, both in demographics and the real estate offerings. Check out some of these ongoing activities in venues close to Sloan’s Lake.
Sloan’s Lake Park
Sloan’s Lake Park is the centerpiece of the neighborhood. You’ll find multi-use trails that encircle the water, fishing, boating and other water sports. It’s also one of the best parks in Denver for sunset picnics, offering fantastic views of both the city skyline and the mountains. In July, the lake is home to the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival, which features two days of dragon boat races, musical performances and Asian food. The park is also a great place to view wildlife, especially birds living in and near the lake and its nearby mud flats.
Denver Climbing Company, 2825 W. 25th Ave.
Ever wanted to learn to rock climb? The Denver Climbing Company offers courses for everyone from beginners to more experienced climbers. Instructors take trips into the mountains to teach climbing on a variety of rock outcroppings. They offer an introductory course at a very reasonable price and also have courses in rappelling.
Mile High Stadium, 1701 Bryant St.
If you live in Sloan’s Park, you are within two miles of Mile High Stadium, home of the Denver Broncos. The stadium has also hosted the Rocky Mountain Showdown between the University of Colorado Buffaloes and Colorado State University Rams, and is home to the Denver Outlaws lacrosse team. Enjoy outdoor concerts and other special events at the stadium throughout the year. Officially, the venue is called Broncos Stadium at Mile High, but most locals prefer the old name.
Children’s Museum of Denver, 2121 Children’s Museum Drive
Very close to Sloan’s Lake is the Children’s Museum of Denver at Marsico Campus. The museum offers exhibits especially designed for young children on a number of subjects, and includes teachings about fire stations, backyard wildlife and the science of water. Children have an opportunity to showoff their creative skills in the on-site art studio and teaching kitchen. The museum is free on the first Thursday of each month from 4-8 p.m., while the outdoor area, Joy Park, is also free of charge during the same time frame. Be aware that no unaccompanied adults are allowed!

Adams Mystery Playhouse, 2406 Federal Blvd.
This unassuming building (it used to be a mortuary) contains Denver’s original mystery dinner theater. Adams Mystery Playhouse offers performances for the public most Friday and Saturday nights year-round (the rest of the week is taken up with private events). Mysteries have different themes and genres, including monsters, Hollywood and the Roaring Twenties. With each mystery comes a buffet (call ahead if you have dietary limitations). Shows are rated PG and PG13, and mix comedy with the macabre. In search of something different for your child’s next birthday party? Adams Mystery Playhouse has you covered with special shows for kids.
