Classic Culinary Treats in Washington Park

Located in the south-central area of Denver, Washington Park is one of the city’s most charming neighborhoods. Filled with homes from the late 19th century as well as a sprawling park for which the area was named, Wash Park, as it is called by locals, is one of the most sought-after neighborhoods in Denver. The allure of open, green space complimented by an array of great neighborhood shops and restaurants has helped to shape Washington Park into the urban oasis it has become today. Many of Denver’s top culinary chefs and emerging restaurateurs have also recognized this area as an ideal Denver destination and have opened their doors to locals and visitors alike. With everything from boutique coffee shops to upscale eateries, there is something for everyone in Washington Park.

Wash Perk, 853 E Ohio Ave.

With a play on its namesake neighborhood, Wash Perk is the epitome of a neighborhood coffee spot. Fostering a community of culinary enthusiasts, Wash Perk has quickly become a beloved destination for locals and visitors alike as they stroll through the charming, tree-lined streets. This inviting coffee shop offers a delightful selection of traditional and specialty coffee drinks, complemented by homemade baked goods and lighter fare, all served in a relaxed atmosphere that embraces the beauty of simplicity.

Vert Kitchen

Every great neighborhood has a great sandwich shop, and in Washington Park, that place is Vert Kitchen. This high-end sandwich shop delivers so much more than the traditional lunchtime items with fresh ingredients such as house-roasted turkey, herbed skirt steak and thick-cut bacon for that perfect BLT. Healthy, real food is the name of the game at Vert Kitchen and with a mission to rely on locally-sourced ingredients and homemade items, they have become a local favorite.

The Cookery at Myrtle Hill

There is nothing better than a business name that not only tells you exactly what it is but also tells you where to find it and in Washington Park, nothing says that better than The Cookery at Myrtle Hill. This area was known as Myrtle Hill up until the early 1900s when the Washington Park moniker was introduced. At its inception, The Cookery at Myrtle Hill was a neighborhood bakery known as Devil’s Food and has since morphed into two storefronts, the bakery and the cookery. Both are quaint and homey, but the cookery is a must with fabulous brunch and lunch menus that take comfort food items like biscuits and gravy or breakfast sandwiches to a whole new level.

Blackbird Public House

The original concept of a public house was where the community came to gather and with Blackbird Public House, that holds true for the Washington Park neighborhood. With an extensive list of beers on tap as well as a menu filled with creative takes on traditional pub fare like mac and cheese and burgers, Blackbird Public House is a warm and friendly place to meet up with old friends or make new ones.

Homegrown Tap and Dough

Everyone has a favorite pizza joint and in Washington Park that would be Homegrown Tap and Dough. Locally-inspired Italian offerings are on the menu in this rustic setting with classics such as Braised Tomato Meatballs and Rigatoni Bolognese. Many dinners come for one of the famed wood-fired pizzas where traditional ingredients are used in creative combinations including the “Pete”za with ham, pineapple and jalapeño or the “Wash Park” with roasted garlic, zucchini and ricotta – truly a culinary hug.
