Ever think about what it’s like to live in the mountains? Contemplating ditching city life to slow down the pace of your life? Dreaming about living closer to the activities you enjoy? Summit County is there for you!
Whatever the reason, mountain living has become increasingly more desirable for a wide demographic of people. Whether you are thinking about retirement or exploring living alternatives as a result of remote work opportunities, life in the Rocky Mountains has become a more desirable alternative as the last wave of Baby Boomers turn 60 and younger generations take advantage of flexible work scenarios.
Since the pandemic hit the United States nearly two years ago, people have been re-evaluating their living situations. Many have opted to take advantage of flexible work arrangements and have moved to areas where they can achieve a better quality of life. As a result, demand for homes in Colorado, both in urban, rural, and mountain communities, has exploded.
Resort communities in Colorado witnessed real estate prices going through the roof during 2021. According to an article in the Colorado Sun, homebuyers paid record-setting prices for homes in and around popular resort areas.
“In eight Western Slope counties anchored by resorts last year, $6.6 billion traded hands through August as buyers flocked to mountain communities during the pandemic,” the article states. “Through August (of 2021), Land Title Guarantee Co. has tracked $11.2 billion in sales volume in those counties, a 71% percent increase over 2020. With four months left in the year, sales volume in resort counties in 2021 has already surpassed the total sales of 2019 by more than $2 billion. Prices keep climbing too, with most resort areas seeing the average and median prices for single homes this year increasing 10% to 30% over 2020.”
It’s no wonder people are attracted to mountain communities where the cost of living can be less than that of the Denver area or at least on par with the bonus of easier access to outdoor amenities. It doesn’t appear that remote work or at least modified in-office attendance is going away any time soon and, as a result, people are re-evaluating their work-play balance. And for some, that means living closer to areas where they can ski, hike, access water sports, and find a sense of community.
Summit County has long been one of the favorite places for people in the Denver area to recreate. Located only 1½ hours outside of the metro area, the county offers endless recreational opportunities as well as summer festivals ranging from musical performances to beer and wine tastings.
So what makes this region so desirable? Here are the top 5 reasons why people choose to live in Summit County.
Reason #1: Skiing and Snowboarding Access
Summit County boasts four ski areas that are within 15 minutes of each other. Arapahoe Basin, Keystone, Breckenridge, and Copper Mountain. A-Basin and Copper Mountain are both on the Ikon Pass while Keystone and Breckenridge fall under the Epic Pass umbrella. Thousands of acres of skiable terrain, impressive vertical, and plenty of annual snow to augment man-made snow make winters in Summit County truly memorable. Best of all, when you’re a resident, you can ski for a couple of hours and not feel guilty about “getting your money’s worth.” Skiing and snowboarding can become part of your daily “workout” routine.
Reason #2: Close Proximity to Denver
For people who want to have access to the great outdoors yet not be too far from the Denver metro area, Summit County checks all the boxes. Located a short distance from Denver, the county is ideal for people who still need to get to the office occasionally or want the conveniences of the big city. While the traffic on I-70 can be difficult, having the appropriate apps downloaded on your phone can help plan your trip during off-peak hours. You may have to leave early and return late, but planning ahead and adding a little extra time can go a long way in reducing the wear and tear you experience in the car.
Reason #3: Year Around Outdoor Activities Abound
It’s not just about skiing or snowboarding in the winter. Countless other outdoor activities create a true winter wonderland and provide plenty of other options for the outdoor enthusiast. Miles and miles of groomed trails provide for incredible cross country skiing at both the Keystone Nordic Center and Frisco Nordic Center. Try your hand at either classical or skate-style skiing while enjoying incredible views. There are plenty of ice skating options throughout the county, both inside and outdoors. And don’t forget about snowshoeing and fly fishing!
During the summer, there’s boating on Dillon Reservoir, golf, mountain biking, 4-wheeling, rafting on the Blue River, and more hiking trails than you’ve ever imagined.
Reason #4: Festivals, Concerts, and More
Breckenridge is home to many festivals during the summer months. Some of the most popular events include several art festivals, the Breckenridge Food and Wine Tasting, the Hogfest, and the Fall Wine Classic. In Keystone, highlights include the Bacon and Bourbon Festival and Bluegrass and Beer Festival. You’ll also find numerous farmer’s markets, concerts, and dance performances throughout the summer.
Reason #5: A Great Sense of Community
When you become a permanent resident of Summit County, you’ll appreciate the sense of community that exists in Silverthorne, Dillon, Frisco, and Breckenridge. One of the best ways to get involved in your new neighborhood is by volunteering your time and knowledge to make a difference. The Summit Foundation is an invaluable resource for aligning your interests and talents with deserving organizations in the area. It’s a great way to give back and meet new people!
